The first women's military band was formed in 1917, shortly after the United States entered World War I. This band, known as the Women's Army Corps Band, was made up of 100 women who had been trained at the Army's School of Music. The band performed at military bases and hospitals, and its members also served as recruiters.

During World War II, the number of women's military bands increased significantly. In 1942, the Navy established the WAVES Band, and the Marine Corps established the Women's Reserve Band. The Army also expanded its Women's Army Corps Band, and by the end of the war, there were over 1,000 women serving in military bands.

The women's military bands played an important role in boosting morale and providing entertainment for troops both at home and abroad. They performed at concerts, parades, and other events, and their music helped to lift the spirits of troops and civilians alike.

The women's military bands also made a significant contribution to the war effort. They recruited new members for the military, and they also performed at hospitals and other facilities to help wounded troops recover.

After the war, the women's military bands continued to serve in the military. Today, there are women's bands in all branches of the U.S. military.

The book "Women Military Bands During World War II: The American Wind Band" is a comprehensive history of these bands. The book is illustrated with over 100 photographs and includes a discography of recordings by women's military bands.

This book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of women in the military, music, or World War II.
