The story begins in the 1950s, when four young women—Susanna, Alice, Ginny, and Harriet—meet at Oxford University. They quickly become close friends, bonding over their shared love of literature and their dreams for the future. However, as the years go by, their lives take different paths. Susanna becomes a successful lawyer, Alice a social worker, Ginny a stay-at-home mom, and Harriet a journalist.
Despite their different circumstances, the four friends remain close, supporting each other through good times and bad. They share their joys and sorrows, their hopes and dreams. They are there for each other through thick and thin.
However, as they get older, the friends begin to face new challenges. Susanna is diagnosed with cancer, Alice's husband leaves her, Ginny's children grow up and leave home, and Harriet is forced to confront her own mortality.
Despite these challenges, the four friends remain close, their friendship stronger than ever. They are there for each other through it all, providing support, comfort, and love.
City of Friends is a beautifully written and moving novel about the power of friendship. It is a story that will stay with you long after you finish reading it.
