Grant McLennan: Inside And Outside The Go Betweens Grant I: Inside And Outside The Go Betweens

About the Book

Grant McLennan was the heart and soul of the Go-Betweens, one of Australia's most beloved and influential indie rock bands. His songwriting was both poetic and incisive, capturing the complexities of love, loss, and the search for meaning in modern life.

In "Grant Inside and Outside the Go-Betweens," author Peter Duguid paints a vivid portrait of McLennan's life and career, from his early days as a shy teenager in Brisbane to his untimely death at age 44. Duguid draws on exclusive interviews with McLennan's family, friends, and bandmates, as well as previously unpublished letters, diaries, and recordings.

The result is a captivating and deeply moving account of one of the most gifted and enigmatic musicians of his generation. "Grant Inside and Outside the Go-Betweens" is a must-read for fans of the Go-Betweens, indie rock, and anyone who appreciates great songwriting.

Exclusive Excerpt

From Chapter 1: "Early Days"

"Grant McLennan was born on February 12, 1958, in the Brisbane suburb of Indooroopilly. His father, Don, was a schoolteacher, and his mother, Jill, was a nurse. Grant was the eldest of four children, and he had a happy and unremarkable childhood."

"McLennan's love of music began at an early age. He was particularly drawn to the Beatles, and he would spend hours listening to their records and learning to play their songs on the guitar. By the time he was a teenager, McLennan had formed his own band, the Go-Betweens, with his friend Robert Forster."

The Go-Betweens quickly became one of the most popular bands on the Brisbane indie scene. Their music was a unique blend of pop melodies and literary lyrics, and they were quickly embraced by critics and fans alike. In 1982, the Go-Betweens released their debut album, "Send Me a Lullaby," which was a critical and commercial success.
