About Yvan Goll
Yvan Goll was born in Saint-Dié-des-Vosges, France, in 1891. He was the son of a Jewish merchant, and he grew up in a wealthy and cultured home.
Goll began writing poetry at a young age, and he published his first collection of poems in 1911. He quickly became one of the leading figures in the French avant-garde movement.
In 1914, Goll was drafted into the French army to fight in World War I. He was wounded in battle, and he spent the rest of the war in a military hospital.
After the war, Goll returned to Paris and continued to write poetry. He also became involved in politics, and he was a member of the Communist Party for a time.
In 1933, Goll fled Germany with his wife, Claire Studer, after the Nazis came to power. They settled in Paris, but they were forced to flee again in 1940 when the Germans invaded France.
Goll and his wife spent the rest of the war in exile in the United States. After the war, they returned to France, where Goll continued to write poetry until his death in 1950.
