The Rise and Fall of Bosses and Reformers: A Tale of Ambition, Power, and Redemption
In the early 20th century, the American labor movement was a hotbed of ambition, power, and corruption. Two men who rose to prominence during this time were Samuel Gompers and Eugene Debs. Gompers was a conservative trade unionist who believed in working within the system to improve the lives of workers. Debs was a radical socialist who believed that capitalism was inherently exploitative and that the only way to achieve true justice for workers was to overthrow the system.

Gompers was born in London in 1850. He came to the United States with his family when he was 13 years old. He began working in a cigar factory at the age of 14. In 1881, he helped to found the American Federation of Labor (AFL). The AFL was a federation of trade unions that represented skilled workers in a variety of industries. Gompers served as president of the AFL for 38 years. During his tenure, he helped to improve the wages and working conditions of millions of American workers.
Debs was born in Terre Haute, Indiana, in 1855. He began working in a railroad shop at the age of 14. In 1893, he helped to found the American Railway Union (ARU). The ARU was a union that represented unskilled workers in the railroad industry. Debs served as president of the ARU for five years. During his tenure, he led the ARU in a number of strikes, including the Pullman Strike of 1894. The Pullman Strike was a major turning point in the American labor movement. The strike was defeated by the federal government, and Debs was sent to prison for his role in the strike.
After his release from prison, Debs became a leading voice in the Socialist Party of America. He ran for president of the United States five times. In 1920, he received over 900,000 votes, more than any other Socialist Party candidate in history.
Gompers and Debs were two of the most important figures in the American labor movement. They were both men of great ambition and power. However, their goals were very different. Gompers believed in working within the system to improve the lives of workers. Debs believed that the system was inherently corrupt and that the only way to achieve true justice for workers was to overthrow the system.
