The company was founded in 1907 by James E. Casey, a 19-year-old entrepreneur from Seattle. Casey started UPS with $100 and a borrowed horse and wagon. The company's first customer was a local department store. UPS quickly grew, and by the 1920s, it was one of the largest package delivery companies in the United States.
UPS continued to grow throughout the 20th century. In the 1950s, the company began to expand internationally. In the 1980s, UPS acquired several other logistics companies, including Emery Worldwide and Mail Boxes Etc.
Today, UPS is a global logistics giant. The company delivers packages to over 220 countries and territories, and employs over 500,000 people worldwide. UPS is a Fortune 500 company and a component of the Dow Jones Industrial Average.
