The Early Years
The Happy Mondays were formed in Salford in 1980 by brothers Shaun and Paul Ryder, along with Mark Day, Paul Davies, and Gary Whelan. The band's early sound was heavily influenced by punk rock and reggae, but they soon began to experiment with dance music and psychedelia.
In 1985, the Happy Mondays signed to Factory Records, the label founded by Joy Division and New Free Download.
